Why is sound so important in film?

Sound makes the world of a difference, and can make or break the film. Using sound correctly can transform your film, but when the sound is not of quality, it breaks the film. It can create tension, drama, it can scare you, it can put you in the mood for the film, sound is there for you to manipulate. I have conducted a survey in which they were shown a clip, only once with diegetic sound effects and dialogue, once with only the non-diegetic soundtrack music, and once with both, and the results speak for themselves.
