RESEARCH: Why is sound so important in a film?

I feel that the above video is a great way to demonstrate the importance of sound and music in film. It shows us the same clip three times, however the first time it's screened only the diegetic sound effects and dialogue are played. On the the hand, the second screening of the clip lacks the diegetic sound effects and dialogue but includes a non-diegetic sound track. On the third and final screening, the clip is shown with both diegetic and non-diegetic to emphasise the effect of layering sounds.

First Screening - with diegetic sound only

I felt that the first screening was very plain and ordinary as there wasn't any interesting dialogue, which meant that without the non-diegetic sounds there was a lot of awkward and silent gaps between dialogue. Nevertheless, the clip still made sense and was understandable, the diegetic sounds worked well with the animations and everything was well-synchronised. However the lack of non-diegetic sound made scenes full of action very bland and boring.

Second screening - with non-diegetic soundtrack only

The second screening was a massive contrast from the first. The dynamic music greatly contributed to the mood and atmosphere creating a far more interesting clip. The non-diegetic sound aided in creating very intense and suspenseful scenes which create a more enjoyable viewing experience. However the lack of diegetic sound also created confusion as the characters speech couldn't be heard. This makes the clip much harder to understand which will only frustrate the viewer and take away from the overall viewing experience.

Third screening - with both diegetic and non-diegetic sound

Of all three screenings, clearly the third was the best as it included all sounds and effects. This made the clip far more enjoyable and entertaining as
