RESEARCH: Purpose of a title sequence

Think about the first 2 minutes of a film. What do you remember? The actors? The crew? The song? Film openings may just seem like the irrelevant start of a film, but they do so much more. In the first two minutes of a film, it's the title sequences function to draw you into the film from the very start.

Overpowering music sets the atmosphere, along with the variety of shot angles and frames. A yellow overtone in the title sequence alone can dramatically change the mood and connotations of the films opening.

Where better to establish the cast of the of the film other than the opening sequence? By crediting the actors, producers, director, crew and also the distribution and production companies, the audience becomes more aware of the film's cast and crew, which could lead to views to enjoy the film more due to biases they may have.

As well as setting the films atmosphere, establishing the characters and straight up telling you what the film is, the films opening is also able to set the films genre through the use of mise-en-scene.
